Anyone who’s watched some or all of “The Passion of Christ” may have grasped the piercing grief and terror that happened on that Good Friday. As a child, I avoided reading through the passages depicting the crucifixion for a reason — it was simply too painful for me to think about the sheer agony He went through on my behalf.
I believe, regardless of what you believe about Him, whether or not He is divine, human, if He died and rose again, or simply lived an exemplary life and died for what He believed again – I believe we all can feel this pain He did at the cross, and leading up to it. I believe we all can agree on this point as follows: His death was violent, cruel, unethical, illegal, and by no means deserved. He hurt no one and He brought healing to the common people. He chose not to run and He chose not to defend himself; instead He chose to stay. He chose this fate.
It’s all of that in which I make this, and more, but some things go beyond words and cannot quite be expressed, no matter how much I try.
I hope this piece brings deep thought, tears, and healing. That’s all He came here for. That’s what He lived for. And that’s what He died for, too. For us to heal. For us to recognize where we fall short. For us to love one another and ourselves enough to tell one another (and Him) we’re sorry. To be forgiven. To go forward and be our best selves.
