Botanical Portrait – Inspired Stargazer Lily, White on Black, Diamond Shape, 2″ each side

Each Botanical Portrait is an individually crafted piece of wearable art made from tiny strips of quilled paper. I use a pixelated, pointillistic approach to quilling, building the image from many small paper elements rather than traditional drawn or painted marks. Additional quilled paper creates the frame around the botanical image, and the finished piece is sealed with a clear resin glaze that adds depth, shine, and protection to the paper surface.

The resin glaze helps protect the finished piece from incidental moisture, but this is still paper-based artwork and should not be considered waterproof. Please remove before showering, swimming, bathing, or prolonged exposure to water. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat, and store carefully when not being worn. Because each portrait is handmade individually, small variations in color, shape, texture, and paper placement are part of its character.

The Stargazer Lily — Meaning & Inspiration

This Botanical Portrait began somewhere quite different from a flower garden. I was inspired by a black-and-white floral blouse worn by a character on The Good Fight. I was drawn to the floral pattern and began translating the shapes into my own quilled-paper language. The finished flower most closely resembled a Stargazer lily, so that became its name.

What makes the piece especially meaningful to me now is the symbolism I discovered in that name. Stargazer lilies are associated with ambition, spiritual energy, hope, renewal, aspiration, healing, and transformation.

I began creating these Botanical Portraits in 2023, before I had fully recognized how deeply transformation and renewal would become themes in my own creative life. Looking back, I find it fascinating that the symbolism seems to have found me through the work itself.

Perhaps this is one of the pleasures of making: sometimes we begin with something as simple as a shape, a color, a piece of fabric, or an image that catches our eye — and only later discover what it might mean to us.
